The story centers on Sybella Devereux, a nearly forty-year-old woman whose sheltered life is disrupted when her elderly aunt falls ill, forcing her to confront responsibilities for the first time. As she grapples with her new role, she navigates the complexities of her relationships with family, friends, and a younger generation, reflecting on themes of independence, affection, and societal expectations. The opening of the novel introduces Sybella as she feels overwhelmed and unprepared for the challenges ahead, especially with her aunt's sudden illness.
