About The History of Sir Richard Whittington

"The History of Sir Richard Whittington" by Henry B. Wheatley is a historical account published in the late 19th century. This work explores the life of Sir Richard Whittington, who is famously linked to the folklore tale of "Whittington and His Cat." The text delves into the blending of historical facts with popular mythology surrounding Whittington, outlining his rise from humble beginnings to becoming the Lord Mayor of London three times. The opening of the narrative introduces the reader to the legendary yet muddled history of Sir Richard Whittington. Wheatley contextualizes Whittington's life against the backdrop of both historical information and the folk tales that have evolved over time. It discusses Whittington's supposed poor lineage, his journey to London, the misattributed legend of the Bow Bells calling him back, and the fable involving his cat, which he sold to achieve great wealth. Wheatley presents the earliest known versions of Whittington's story, emphasizing the inaccuracies in later adaptations that exaggerated his humble beginnings and the fictional elements that have overshadowed his real accomplishments, including his charitable deeds and civic contributions.
