What is the the chosen one trope?
The chosen one is fantasy's oldest engine: a prophecy, a sword in a stone, a mark at birth. Modern fantasy loves to subvert it — the prophecy is wrong, the chosen one refuses, or the sidekick is the real hero.
Common variations
- Subverted prophecy
- Reluctant chosen one
- Two chosen ones
What to watch out for
- A hero who succeeds through destiny rather than choices
