Languages spoken in California

Of 37,121,454 residents of California aged 5 and over, 16,478,816 (44.4%) speak a language other than English at home, and 6,499,255 (17.5%) speak English less than "very well".

The most common non-English language is Spanish with 10,513,931 speakers, followed by Chinese (incl. Mandarin, Cantonese) (1,291,832).

Limited-English-proficiency counts are the best public proxy for local demand for interpreters and document translation in healthcare, courts, schools and social services.
